In the early days Lara performed with much excitement and enthusiasm. I have seen quite a few videos from that time and even then you could see her passion. By following her career, you can tell how much Lara has matured and how her voice has become more controlled and refined. There may be a difference in her singing voice but not in her power or passion. (What a great name for a biography for Lara - Power and Passion).
“Carpe Diem, C’est cueillir l’instant, mais surtout saisir l’instant, saisir le jour pour choisir la vie. Lara”
"Carpus Diem, It is to gather the moment, but especially to seize the moment, to seize the day to choose the life. Lara "
Puisque C’est L’amour
“Darling, this is love
Receive this love
As you’d receive the gift of life
And should it be a dream
Then seize the dream
Make it all come true, true love
For love is a flame
That sets hearts ablaze
And never ever will the fire fade
Through the pouring rain
Through the brighter days
Darling, this is love”
These words were taken from a non literal translation. How beautiful. Although Lara did not write the lyrics it is a great way to start her album. I love the melody and I love the way the song slowly builds in power. It’s a beautiful song of love. It says there may be bad times but we will get through them because we have true love. I sing along with this song whenever I hear it. And I replay it once or twice before going onto Tu T’en Vas. This is one of my top five or six favorite Lara songs.
Tu T’en Vas
Another of Lara’s songs with a great melody. It’s very even keeled throughout the song and it’s kind of folksy. As I mentioned before, I am a sucker for heart wrenching songs.
“When my nude skin shudders under your fingers
And I see in your eyes
That it is her that you want
You leave leaving me alone behind you
You leave and my heart flies away in bursts
You leave while pulling out a piece of me”
This song was performed in Lara’s Montreal concert June16 2006. Another song I like to sing along with.
Leila
I really like this song. The words paint a great picture of a beautiful woman (perhaps from India or the Middle East), one who is “much too beautiful”. She has choices to make. She is trying to decide whether to become a queen and be imprisoned (“these walls well too high”) with all the controls and responsibilities or to be a free and normal woman. She seems to be a free spirit.
“She has learned to speak this language
That alone the sultans have the right to learn.
The veiled eyes, the body half nude
She dances without holding anything back
Smiles but thinks about leaving
To live but as a queen or to be a siren”
One of Lara’s most amazing performances is Leila from her live album 1998. She holds a note for 14 or 15 seconds. WOW. Again Lara performed Leila in Montreal of this year.
Il Existe Un Endroit
It has a very catchy melody. This is a very light upbeat song of happily ever after. Every time I hear this song I am immediately put into a very good mood.
“There exists a place at the end of the earth
Where I will pass my entire life to please you
There exists a place where even doubt
Leaves its place to the water that flows drop by drop
There exists a place where even I suppose
That the time between you and me would mark pauses
There exists a place where even the wind will stop”
Je Suis Malade
Je Suis Malade is one of Lara’s milestone songs. I have heard this, Serge Lama, song sung by other people. I do not like it by any other artist I have heard so far but Lara. It was hard for me to get used to it. It seemed “very” French at first. Carpe Diem was the first real French music I heard. But the more I listened to French music the more I appreciate this song. As much as I like a sad song, this song is depressing. “I do not dream. I am dirty. I am ugly. I have no more desire to live my life” and on and on. But, to me, it is the power and the passion that makes Lara’s version of this song a classic. You can just feel the pain. How great is the acapella portion? Awesome song.
Je Vivrai
This song, to me, is non descript in the music end. I can take it or leave it depending upon what mood I am in. It was not written by Lara, but it speaks of what life would be like without him in her life. She would go on living but really just existing. The lyrics do not have that Lara Fabian intensity. This seems like a filler song.
Au Loin La-bas
I like the music of this song. Again there is nothing spectacular about it. I believe it to be about a person who seems lost and waiting to be swept of her feet. It was not written by the L&R duo and seems to be a very simple even keeled song.
Ramene-Moi
This song has great rhythm and is very upbeat. I love they way Lara says “pourquoi.”
I really feel the emotion in Lara’s singing in this song. This is one of a few songs on this album that Lara wrote with someone other than Rick.
How were you able to let me leave
Why were you not able to keep me
How you were able to let my eyes flee you
So far from your soul and from your warmth
These are very interesting words. I think this song is about two people drifting apart and the need /want to be reunited.
Pas Sans Toi
I love the piano in the beginning. It’s absolutely beautiful. I think this song has it all. The lyrics are awesome, the music wonderful and Lara sings this song so well - with such passion and feeling. It’s my favorite French song (Aime is a close second). I was absolutely blown away with her performance of Pas Sans Toi in the Live 2002 DVD. The way she sang it to the audience, they cried, she cried and some fans even reaching out to her. Here’s a non literal translation:
Dry you tears I will not leave you
I’d need much more of a reason to throw this all away. It won’t happen.
Dry you tears and make love to me once again
Do you remember the times that we dreamed of having children as we sang?
I still love you so much.
No Not without you
I could never live this life without you
If you would take me back in your arms once more
I know that we could rebuild everything
No No No Not without you
To be without you would be to deny my life
It would be like silencing a cry
So if I’m wrong, walk away
But if you love me, wait for me
Dry your tears Time will wait for us
We lost ourselves in it all but
There are no more reasons left to be afraid I believe
Dry your tears for you know that we are so much stronger than time and sadness.
No need to say anything about the lyrics.
Dites-moi Pourquoi Je L’aime
Lara sings this song in a very sexy way and it is another passionately sung song. Again it’s about a want to reunite with a lost love. But here she is questioning why. I love this song.
Saisir Le Jour
This is my least favorite of all of Lara’s songs. Funny this album has my favorite and least favorite song on it. I’m glad Lara had nothing to do with writing it. It is way too repetitive to the point of irritation. Sorry Lara.
Si Tu M’aimes
Another great song from this album. I love the music especially the guitar solo. Lara sings it so well. You can definitely tell the songs that Lara and Rick wrote. She wrote “Your moors under your Irish sky”. I read that Lara once lived in Ireland with her boyfriend at the time. I wonder if it was written for him.
Bridge Of Hope
This is an awesome song. Very inspiring. “How many prayer will it take? How many tears must we cry?” say it all. This is a great ending song for this album. It seems very appropriate especially today.
Carpe Diem is not as sophisticated as her newer albums but as a sophomore album it really has a number of great classic songs.
After the reviews I would like to talk about the “leaving” factor in so many of Lara’s songs. Even in the positive upbeat songs, she writes of one person in the relationship leaving or the possibility of one leaving. Is it a French thing? Is it in American music as well and I am not picking it up?
