Matt 3rd at Talladega after strong run In a race fraught with frightening crashes, Matt Kenseth and the #17 DeWALT Ford escaped unharmed for a 3rd place finish on Sunday. The great finish was truly a team effort with stellar work also coming from the Killer Bees on pit road and Mike Calinoff atop the spotters’s stand. It was a gutsy performance, and it keeps Matt Kenseth right in the thick of winning the Championship!

That's great, Mark. I noticed he was in second for a while.

For a large part of the day he hung around second. Then, at the end he was in first place with three laps to go, but a caution came out because of a wreck and after cleaning up the track they had to do a restart. It's hard to stay in the lead like that because you need someone to "draft" with and can't do that from the front position. Everybody is gunning for you at the end, and because of the restart they are right on your tail to begin with. I'm very happy with the result, because it is a tough track to escape without a wreck and he did it. Plus, a lot of other drivers in the Chase had bad days, making it even better for Kenseth!

New track record! Matt claims the pole at Kansas Matt Kenseth drew a late qualifying slot and then blew the field away with a speed of 180.856 and a time of 29.858 to take the pole at Kansas while setting a new track record. CONGRATS TO MATT, ROBBIE, JACK, AND THE KILLER BEES!
Let's hope that translates to a victory on Sunday afternoon! .....and a big jump in the standings! GO MATT!!

Congrats to Matt for setting the record. How is he doing compared to his rivals? I hope he gained on them.

Very good question! The frustrating thing about yesterday's race is that a fifth place finish is awesome, and usually a big points gainer. Problem though, is that four of the top five finishers yesterday are all in the Chase For The Championship. With that many contenders up at the top, it means that you actually LOST ground in the points race. Tony Stewart continues to race well, and that will make it that much harder to catch him. Still, it was a great day for Matt, because had he finished any further down, he probably would be out of contention by now. I'm still very hopeful that he has a shot at it!
