I am a volunteer at SafeNet, an agency dealing with the issue of domestic violence. I mostly help out with the children, which means that I participate in activities with them while their mother's are in group counseling. For some time now I have been helping out on wednesday nights, which counsels girls from about fourteen to twenty one. That means that the children that I have served on these nights have been between the ages of one to five years of age. Well, there has been a real need for more help on Tuesday nights (there are always too few volunteers) because the age group of the kids on that night is between six and seventeen years of age. Everyone at SafeNet has felt that I could be used in a much greater capacity if I worked on Tuesdays because it would give me a chance to have an impact on the teenage boys that come there. I decided to switch nights, and therefore last night was my first with my new group. But because I was no longer going to be coming on Wednesdays, they asked me if I could come one last time so that they could have a chance to say good-bye. Tonight was that night. They had a party for me, and made cake. It was awesome, as we played games and shared laughter together. I think what I liked most about it was that I got a chance to tell the four staff members just how much I respected the work that they do, and what a pleasure it was to work with such dedicated people. I wrote a card for them to express exactly how I felt about the good work they do for others in need, and that it mattered. I'm really going to miss everyone on Wednesday nights, for sure, but I am looking forward to new opportunities and a greater possibilty of helping some people who could really need it. Here's a thought...."giving is a living thing; and once you start to give, you can never give enough"
