In Command
Listen to me now Wanna be's That's all they are and all they'll ever be Not like me I know the rules and how it's gonna be Imagining The dream that is the heart of everything Then you do What must be done to make it true
But when at last I finally touch the stars I'll still be who I am yeah Cause I know where I come from And who's in command
When I fall I'll read the writing screaming off the wall Learn it all But I'll be careful with who I call Cause philosophy won't save you when you're public property Yeah Psychology oh baby Is all you offer me yeah
But when at last I finally touch the stars I'll still be who I am yeah Cause I know where I come from And who's in command Oh I'm telling you
But when at last I finally touch the stars I'll still be who I am Cause I know where I come from And who's in command
I'd give it all yeah I'd give it all in a day Cause I'm telling you
And when I finally walk among the stars I'll still be who I am Cause I know where I come from And who's in command Yes I am Ooh Cause I know where I come from And who's in command oh yeah Oh yeah Cause I know where I come from I'm in command I'm in command Yes I'm in command Oh yeah yeah

I think this is my favourite song from the "In Deep" album. I love the strength of herself in this song. Her vocals are awesome on this track.

I think this song has really connected to me because of my songwriting dream.
"Wanna be's That's all they are and all they'll ever be Not like me I know the rules and how it's gonna be Imagining The dream that is the heart of everything Then you do What must be done to make it true"
The fact is when you have a dream you must pursue it with everything that you are. Especially with songwriting or singing the dream needs to come from everything within you because life experiences are bring such a big part of the music. How are you ever going to sing or write a song about a broken heart if you've never laid your heart on the line and let it be broken. I find this song is relates a lot to me because even though I'm following this dream I won't do it if through chasing this dream I lose who I am and what God wants me to be.
"But when at last I finally touch the stars I'll still be who I am yeah Cause I know where I come from And who's in command"
I still want to be who God wants me to be because He is in command not me. But I am also in command of my actions and I still need to do some chasing.

There are so many great songs on the three albums of Tina Arena that I have ("Don't Ask", "In Deep", and "Just Me"), but I have to agree with you and really love this song Leona! The lyrics are great!
Your comments remind me of a song that I am sure you are familiar with by Steven Curtis Chapman:
Remember Your Chains
I couldn't help but wonder what he was thinking As he stared out the window through the sky It seemed he was taking his last look at freedom From the hopeless, longing look in his eyes There were chains on his hands and chains on his feet And as I passed him by the thought came to me
Remember your chains Remember the prison that once held you Before the love of God broke through Remember the place you were without grace When you see where you are now Remember your chains And remember your chains are gone
There's no one more thankful to sit at the table Than the one who best remembers hunger's pain And no heart loves greater than the one that is able To recall the time when all it knew was the shame The wings of forgiveness can take us to heights never seen But the wisest ones, they will never lose sight of where they were set free Love set them free
So remember your chains Remember the prison that once held you Before the love of God broke through Remember the place you were without grace When you see where you are now Remember your chains And remember your chains are gone
And in the light of all that we've been forgiven of We will find our hearts fuller and freer To give and receive God's love
So remember your chains Remember the prison that once held you Before the love of God broke through Remember the place you were without grace When you see where you are now Remember your chains Oh, remember your chains When you remember your chains Remember your chains are gone Imagine what your life would be If Jesus had not set you free Remember your chains are gone Remember
I appreciate your confession, and how very beautiful your words;
"even though I'm following this dream I won't do it if through chasing this dream I lose who I am and what God wants me to be."
and
"I still want to be who God wants me to be because He is in command not me. But I am also in command of my actions and I still need to do some chasing."
Might I add that your songwriting will never be more meaningful or have the significant impact on others' lives that it now does outside the framework of those statements.
Beautiful. Keep up the great work!

I'd say Tina's doing just fine and that you're quite "in command" yourself, Leona!
